- John Sanders (b. abt 1630, d. after 1681)
- John Sanders is the first member of our Sanders family line in America
that can be proven. We have good documentation for John's son Richard
down to Jesse Sanders. The documentation on John and Phoebe Sanders
is not so clear. What is clearly documented is that John came from England
and settled in Nansemond Cty, Va. He and two other people patented 1600
acres of land in 1681 (Nansemondand Isle of
Wight, Va). We know that Phoebe was alive in 1706, widow of John Sanders,
remarried as Phoebe Curle according to Robert Sanders
will. From the dates mentioned in the existing historical documents
(will's and land grants) we can estimate that John was probably born
abt. 1630.

Notes about Jesse Sanders: We
have documented that Hardy Sanders father was Rev. Jesse Sanders. We think
that Jesse was probably William and Agnes Sanders son and was born (abt.
1775) in Chatham, NC
(see research page).
Jesse was listed on the 1800 Chatham Cty census as:
living alone, est age 16-26 yrs old. We think Jesse then moved to Moore
County, NC sometime after 1800 and raised his family. The 1815 census shows
he owned 150 acres of land (Moore County, near Cabin Creek). This land was
later deeded to his son Hardy Sanders.
